I know we've done the King Crimson poll, but now...

Robert Fripp.

Also feel free to comment on Fripp disciples.

This poll goes out to Suit & Tie Guy.

On June 20th, 1979, Robert Fripp did a record store tour to promote the lp Exposure. We got there early and sat right in front of his stool. He was going to do Frippertronics, but lightning hit the record store (Peaches) and fried one of his Revox machines. Fripp asked the crowd if they would mind listening to him play over the taped performance from the night before. Everybody said "PLAY!", and he did, it was pretty inspirational.

The Eno stuff and even his guitar work for Peter Gabriel and Bowie is great.

NOT CRAP

I happen to like Robert Fripp better outside of King Crimson than in, his cameos on certain records by Bowie, Eno, Van Der Graaf Generator, etc often times make the whole album for me. Sometimes I get the sense on KC records he is holding back, but on the guest spots he really let's loose.

The Frippertronics stuff is cool, in small doses. He made a Daryl Hall lp pretty listenable, so points for that.

not crap :WF: 5

I think you're right about that. He's written things to that effect, anyway.

I was recently re-listening to "Heroes" and was once again knocked out by the ferocity and abandon of his playing. (Another Green World has some fine, fine Fripp playing on there, too.) I'd be happy to hear more guest spots from the guy.

I want to thank Fripp for introducing me to the works of Gurdjieff, Ouspensky, and J.G. Bennet. All those who are interested in Fripp and his methods/ideas/beliefs should google those names.[/b]

wow, so far it's unanimous

an occasionally magical guitar player, and a really really funny guy in his constipated way

his solo on 'st. elmo's fire' is my tip for his top

He has an amazing ebow solo on the Roaches song "Losing True". If thats not an ebow, then he has the greatest sustain in rock history.

I second everything that has been said, with these exceptions:

1. I enjoy Fripp solo and guest fretting as much as King Crimson.
Other parts of the King Crimson catalogue have had there moments of softness, but his playing and writing have, by far, been acute, dynamic and boundary defining over the course of 35+ years.

2. Was that really his solo on St. Elmo's Fire? Not that song from the 80'shit movie?

Also, on the Fripp/Eno tip, word from the official DGM Web site has this duo at work on & off on a new collaboration. For this, I allow myself to feel anticipation.

Plus, for those who want to hear more Fripp cutting loose, there is an excellent album on Seattle's FWD label called "The Repercussions of Angelic Behavior", credited to Rieflin, Fripp, Gunn.

Gunn being Trey Gunn of KC versions 5 & 6
Rieflin being Bill Rieflin, formerly of Ministry/RevCo and the Minus5, and currently behind the traps for REM.
Fripp being Fripp.

This is a great album of talented players.

Dig.

No, not that one. The song from Eno's Another Green World, which predates the crap movie by about a decade.
