hello all
i have been spending a lot of time up here in chicago and i was wondering if there are any places (aside from guitar center) to buy used and new gear. specifically, any stores that specialize in this but also... maybe out of the way places that you all go...
unless it's a secret.

Midwest Buy and Sell, Irving Park and Austin.
Unless you want to look at and try a lot of gear all in one place, I think you will always do better on price on craig's list or ebay.

Make'n Music, 1455 W. Hubbard street.
Strange stuff.
P.S. It's not 2003 anymore, Midwest Buy and sell is a waste of rented property.

Used to be THE place to find quality, affordable synthesizers back before everyone wanted synthesizers.

I disagree... They still have some nice instruments that come in and out of there among the regular Cort/Carvin/Peavy type poop.... a few nice amps at market prices... oddball stuff...and a deal or two every so often. Oh, wait... why do I want you all going there buying the stuff I want?
<ahem>... yes, it sucks. Keep away.

If you go to Midwest, make sure you call first and get explicit confirmation that they will be open when you get there.
The last two times I have tried to go, they were closed when they were supposed to be open.
The last time, they closed the door in my face--an hour and a half early--as I walked up to it.
I couldn't believe it. Right in my face! That's a long drive to have a door shut in your face. WTF.

As far as amps go, Tommy's has a really meager selection. Mostly new amps by Kustom and Laney and some other crud. They have some interesting guitars, some of which aren't overpriced. But as far as amps, they have a better selection of weird or used amps at Guitar Center on Halsted.
Music Go Round on Milwaukee has some cool used amps sometimes.
