4i'd have to say i like it okay. musically, it sorta reminds me of a cross between Unwound and Post-Jimmy-Page. it makes me think of guys in their early to mid 20's, smoking a lot of pot and jamming out in a basement. i definitely prefer the second song over the first.
the disparity between the hi-techness of the lead guitar sound and the low-fi sound of the drums struck me as kinda odd. the drum sound conjures up an image of a single mic (like an SM58 or something) a few feet away from the kit in a pretty small room. the playing is cool in terms of keeping a good groove and stepping it up as appropriate, but the fidelity of it left me kinda going "hrm". it definitely has a basement stoner sound to it, which is something i can get into as far as "genres" go.
i much prefer the lead guitar's more ambient role in the second song than its "blues solo" role in the first. the lead guitar in the first song is a definite put-off for me, whereas in the second song i think it really adds to the space of the song. i realize that without vocals, it helps to have something like a non-rythmn guitar filling in that space. but i just generally prefer my lead guitar to either be a little more understated, or ripping my head off. and the solo on that first song just kinda makes me cringe, like, i realize how fun it can be to wank on a blues scale, and it's actually done pretty well here, but it's kinda like when you shake a metal can full of pennies near a dog, that's my general reaction to a bluesy solo.
this comment is more a comment on my own bizarre obsession with "that sounds like" than it is with your song, but the second song's first two chords screamed foo fighters' "everlong". not that it's even remotely a rip-off, cause it's not, at all, but just i got the sense that those are almost the exact same chords, the first two anyways.
out of curiosity, how alternate is the tuning of the rythmn guitar? is it just a dropped D, or is there more to it than that? it reminds me of stuff i would write when i used to play a DADAA tuning. it just had an alternate-tuning feel to it anyways, which is usually a good thing in my book.
as far as one-riff songs go (i'm blocking out the solo from the first song at this point), you guys do a really nice job with mixing up the dynamics of the presentation and using that as the main component of the arrangement. i really get into that kinda stuff.
i listened to your songs, and then listened to don cab's "what burns..." and now i'm listening to your songs again... i have to say, if i had to choose to listen either to your songs or to the don cab album, i'd choose your songs. more the second song than the first, for the blues solo reason stated above.
one thing i would look into is tuning/intonation. both the rythmn guitar and bass gave hints of being either slightly out of tune, or not properly intonated. i don't mean to insult if you already know all this, but in case you don't... it's important to keep in mind that good intonation is good and bad intonation is alot more likely to be destructive than good. so again, not to insult, but maybe check out the intonation of the rythmn instruments. or even the tuning in general. it's tough to pick out which it is, but the recording smacks of one of those two issues. and there's always the way the note is fretted, but i'm not even gonna suggest that as a possibility cause that's by far the hardest one to remedy. if anything, as i listen to the first track, maybe it's just that the 5th string on the rythmn guitar is a little out of tune. and that's really the easiest thing to fix, too.
but, very long story only slightly less long than it could be, i'd go see you guys play if it was at a club with the right atmosphere (i.e. not a lot of lights or yuppies). also, with a nice spaced-out, ambient kinda vocal, almost like a not-so-effected MBV kinda thing, it could go even further. but as-is, thumbs up on everything but that guitar solo.
and i bet there's plenty of people that like that part, too. did i mention my aversion to blues solos?
ps - sorry about the rambling and extraneous info. hopefully there's something useful in there. and please don't let anything i said here affect what you do or what you wanna do, etc. except for the part about the tuning/intonation, which maybe could be checked. and the solo.
cheers

5thanks a lot man...
as of now we are just two 22 year old stoners in the basement(you pinned us)
so it is hard to record something that sounds great with two people....with one Shure SM57
and neither of us are very good drummers...so..yeah
as for that solo....that was put in last minute by the other guy...i don't like it either but he insists on having it...he's a big time bluesy guitar player
i mean i wrote the songs...i should have the say in what parts stay and go..
at first the song "flight of the knome" had an ambient delayed guitar over it just like "agatha" does....but it got changed....i liked it better the old way
and yeah...you pinned us with the SM57 too...hah
but yeah thanks for taking the time to listen and give a review...i appreciate that greatly
it's hard being in a project with just two people....we can't play shows and shit for now....so that sucks very much

8HI guys I'd be interested to see what you thought of my stuff too. Just mainly interested in what you think of the recording and or production. The songs themselves are pretty simple - we are only a three piece and they were all done live in the studio (was actually the same desk AC/DC recorded Back in Black on!). You might be interesed also in the specs that we used - they are here http://www.hothouse.net.au/index.shtml
Here are the songs:

cool yeah any comments would be much appreciated!
thanks
