a friend of mine has suggested starting an online zine about independent music.
on the one hand, i think i would like to do this but on the other hand i'm aware that it's a good way of becoming the target of universal hatred. i'm thinking pitchfork obviously.
since i consider this to be a good place to judge people's reactions to the possibility of something to counter the 'cool' or 'zany' approach of pitchfork and their ilk, i was wondering if anyone had any comments or suggestions regarding content or logistical approach.
would anyone actually like some online music press worth a damn?
is all musical writing as abhorrent as we all make out?
is there anyway of doing this that won't make everyone sigh and want to rinse their head under a cold tap?

babelfish anyone?
The idea of a new online review site isn't bad, but can you really compete with pitchfork? ie daily updates, features, news, oceans of meaningless hype. It sounds like a full time job

those areas would be avoided i guess.
literally just well written appreciations of music, some reviews and interviews.
also, this site is going to be piggy-backing off a site that gets 100,000 hits a week so getting attention is not really going to be a problem.

They're kind of late on some releases and have a strange penchant for noise and the avant-garde, but they take themselves far less seriously than Pitchfork does. The news section and mix-tape generators are especially genius.

i've tried this idea once or twice, but both have fizzled. i thought i had some really unique ideas that would take some of the perceived self-importance and exclusivity of a typical online 'zine away from potential nay-sayers, but nothing has ever come to fruition, yet.
i'd be down with helping.

Perfect Sound Forever might be a good model for you.
PSF doesn't tend to focus very much on new stuff. A 'zine like PSF with more of this focus would be good, I think.

I really liked Freaky Trigger, but it's a bit dormant these days.

those look good but they are competition, not a solution.
this is something new, i have no interest in submitting stuff to an editor anymore.
