Nina Nastasia in Bloomington, IN... never showed up

I can't explain the excitement I felt when I heard that Nina was coming to play our little town. Elated. I looked forward to this almost as much as the whole TnG festival.

My friend who goes to law school in Louisville spent all weekend getting his work done just so he could drive up to see her.

She never showed up for the show. No warning, no call, not anything. Show was supposed to start at 9:00 pm, we waited until 11:30 in the rain.

I really hope they are OK and nothing bad happened on the road.

However, the guy that books the club says he saw a van pull up at 7:00pm (which was when they said they'd be there). They even slowed down and looked into the club. He waved and called the soundguy in, but the band never showed up.

The show was booked rather last minute. There was abosultely no promotion whatsoever. Because of this, I sent bulletins out and messages to the local show's list about the show, telling people they should not miss this show. So I'm wondering if they split because there was no promotion. Regardless, it still upsets me deeply that she didn't play. It's not our (the fans') fault if the promoter doesn't do his job.

I stood at the front door and waited, and watched the doorguy explain to the people that came that the headliner hasn't showed up. And although there were only about 20 people that showed up, each and everyone was there to see her, and each and everyone was totally bummed when they heard the news.

Anyhow, I really hope that they are ok . And if they are OK, I hope that there is some explanation for this. Maybe someone on this forum knows what happened?

This is the first time, in the 25 years that this club has been open, that a headliner did not show up without any warning.

why wouldn't they tell anyone about this? a myspace bulletin? anything?

yes, that guy is a flake. no, he did not promote the show.

they probably didn't tell anyone because they're on tour, in a van.

the promoter's job is to promote the show. i don't know the details of WHY they didn't go, but i bet they weren't thinking "well, the promoter really fucked us on this one, hopefully MTAR will come through for us and make our drive & hotel worthwhile."

i bet they would have appreciated your efforts. they were definitely disappointed-looking last night.

I understand this perspective, and i'm not trying to blame anyone or anything like that. I have no idea what went on between the promoter and them, but it still seems really strange to cancel the day of the show, without warning, unless something really dramatic happened last minute. But I'll shut up about it now.

I hope they have a great show tonight (Bottomless Pit!!!) and I envy those of you that will get to see it. Don't miss this you lucky jerks!

best,
mike

Angry Russian Mike, Fellow Clevelander and Nina lover,

I am so sad to hear of this! I feel the bum for you! And the only thing to do when bummed is listen to Nina Nastasia!

If you can make it to Chi-Chi tonight, I will buy you a ticket and can put you and any other escorting Mike's up for the night. Not even on the floor, guest-room style!

Itchy, this friendly invite in itself makes me feel better.

Thanks. I have stongly considered it, but it just isn't possible for me. distance, time, work and other plans prevent me from attending this event.

i may get a sudden surge of sponteneity and say "fuck it", in which case I will let you know.

thanks,
mike

Silkworm was compelled to bail on a couple of shows in our existence. Both times, it came back to bite us in the ass! Ha ha!

We played half an hour in Madison one time, as the headliner, after an unnamed artist played for waaay too long as an opener and we went on at 1AM. We really played a real show, but it was quite short. One of the five guys there was really upset and sullied our name via the Internet.

Another time, we show up at this house in NJ, and there is a tiny basement. Maybe four people there. They are not going to start the show until The Simpsons is over. We are tired and decide to fuck off to the nice apartment in Brooklyn where we can stay.

The next day, Engine Kid (with whom we were touring, and who stayed at the house in NJ) tell us that at 9PM (after Simpsons was over), all these kids came out of the woodwork, and they had a truly excellent basement show. At our NYC show, we heard from three or four people who went to see us in NJ only to find we had bailed.

That was the last time we bailed on purpose.

I totally understand why Nina et al would bail if they felt that the show was a total loss, however. Esp if they have had a few losers lately. The band might not seem like they mind when ten people show up, but believe me, they kinda mind. It wears on you after a while.
