The Black Angels were the most exciting band to come across, album wise. Their live show is great, too. It engulfs you in the same tones as the album. It was also relieving to see a band of my generation do something political. All that was out there that was serious about it was like Neil Young and Bruce Springstein. Green Day attempted that silly pop album that ironically capitalized on capitalism gone wrong. Equally disheartening was Eminem's political song. His reaction was to what, beat up the president?
Seeing the Ex at Touch and Go was also eye opening. I had never heard them before, or heard about them. The drummer plays some of the catchiest beats. And that bald dude on guitar had his hand bleeding by the end of the third song!

3The new Mountain Goats album caught me totally off guard. It was really the wife's purchase, but she'd left it in the car, and as I drove to work I gave it a listen. I listened, rapt, for the entire length, from the "narrator's" waking up alone to his eventual demise in the brackish water. It's been a long time since I've heard an album so completely whole; and since Darnelle isn't usually my cup of tea, I was surprised how quickly the record won me over, aesthetically.
Salut, John Darnelle. Great fucking album.

4Hmm! I need to pick that up.
Last album to blow my mind was TV On The Radio - Return To Cookie Mountain. Absolute incredible the whole way through. Brains blown right out the back of my head. Last album to give me that strong a response... hmm... maybe White Light/White Heat, or In The Aeroplane, or Entertainment...
So, it's really fucking good.
I mean, I was already a fan of TVOTR, but this thing made the first LP look like they were just playing. You can live in this sound, and it's huge and red and black and angry.

5The Beatles.
Just kidding. Gosh.
I've been really digging on Casiotone for the Painfully Alone for a few months. The songwriting is so charming.

6Seeing the Didjits made me feel like I was 20 again. I don't think I have smiled that much in months - actually, the last three weeks have made me very happy, rock-wise. I hope this becomes the norm for me.

8The last new artist who totally sucked me in was Josephine Foster, particularly her record with the Supposed, All the Leaves Are Gone.
The last old artist that blew my mind was Dr. Feelgood's Down By the Jetty. And Joni Mitchell.

9The Lights - Diamonds And Dirt
Easily in the Top 5 albums of this year. Such an improvement over their first album Beautiful Bird, which is a fine album.. but this new one is just incredible.
