You've seen it done.
Obsessive compulsion or reliable time-waster and/or vengence on a useless part of your anatomy?

With the dog that I've been around for a while lately it usually only happens when he's getting frustrated waiting around for you to take him out and is usually a precursor to him fucking your leg.
Funny. Not crap.

Always funny.
Even better is when my dog is chewing on a treat and starts growling and fighting her own back leg or tail, which invariably morphs into some bizarre kind of play with the treat itself and various parts of her body.

How right he was.

Never Crap.
This is like seeing someone trip and fall. You've seen it a thousand times and it never stops being freakin' hilarious.

_Dragon does this, but it's no where near as entertaining as his poop dance.
He has learned that when I ask him if he needs to poop, that it means he gets to go for a walk.
He does this weird tap dance/ballet thing that's so fucking funny.

The only thing better is a watching a dog's back leg go nuts when you scratch it in just the right place.
OR
Watching a dog "chase" something in it's sleep.
All three of these things pretty much make life worth living.

Also, right after my dog is done taking care of some major business on her morning walk, she'll step forward a few feet and then kick up a bunch of dirt and grass with her two back legs, all the while looking up at you with that happy dog look of "Look what I just did!"
