I've actually been inspired by Odette and Kimyetta, so something good has come from their self-indulgent alter egos.

Actually, I was more inspired by an old kerble post, but why split hairs?

Anyway, I'm curious to hear what folks here thing about the white nature of independent rock music. There are not very many people of color who are part of this scene. While here are some examples to the contrary, I don't think I really need to argue this point.

Is this a problem? How do you feel about this? Why do you think this is so?

Labels are relectant to promote African-American artists who are not making "Urban" (modern euphemism for "colored") music.

Lots of good artists have been dicked over by that.

I think I'd rather have a modest amount of people of color in independent rock bands, other than a big to-do made over certain mediocre bands that feature members of color.

Coming from personal experience, it's never really bothered me that much. I've always felt much more comfortable going to shows now than I ever did when I was in high school listening to metal and hard rock. (Never been to a Slayer show...never will.) And to lay it all out on the line, I've been more dismayed by the lack of family at shows. Regardless, I'm all about the music. It'd be nice to see a wide representation of cultures reflected in one's local music scene, and in Chicago I believe there is! But, like I mentioned earlier, I'd rather have there be one or two really fantastic diverse bands than a shitload of culturally diverse bands that suck ass.

I don't think it really presents a problem. I mean, hip-hop circles are almost totally free of white people, and nobody gets upset about that. Personally, I would like to see more diversity. It would make for a more interesting atmosphere, with more ideas being shared. But it doesn't really bother me.

When I do encounter the sort of rhetoric that tries to make it out that the rock community is essentially sexist or racist just because most of the people in band are men and most of them are white, I just get irritated. There is nothing wrong with having a genre of art that is dominated by one sex or one race, as long as it's not actively excluding people. Girls can pick up a guitar and play any time they want.

What does bother me is when a group of white people get together and then proceed to make fun of blacks, Arabs, women, gay people, or what have you. Usually, these people are numbskulls who would never have anything to do with the independent rock community.
