I'm looking to get a basic tape recorder to hook up to my new console, just to try things out, and I'll upgrade at some point in the future.

Is $1000 CAD, or about $700 US, a good price for such a machine?

That's an okay price. For the same amount of money you can get an Otari MX 5050 1/2" eight track machine which will sound loads better. Of course it's less tracks, but that's one of the reasons it will sound so much better. Also, they are very reliable machines. I don't know if that holds true for the Fostex machines.

Just a thought. Good luck.

If you can find it the tascam MSR 16s is the best of the 1/2" 16 tracks. It has dolby S which is a big improvement over DBX noise redux.
The 1/2" 16s are good for the money and tape costs stay low too.
