The film "American Hardcore" (http://www.sonyclassics.com/americanhardcore/) is getting a Chicago premiere tonight at Pipers Alley (230 W. North Ave). Movie is at 7pm. Liar's Club is hosting the after party following. Pegboy will be playing (with original bassist Steve Saylors) along with Destroy Everything. Apparently Pegboy will play around 11.

Liar's Club also has some free passes to the movie, so if you want to stop by there to pick one up, they're at 1665 W. Fullerton.

"American Hardcore" will also start a limited run at the Century Theater on Clark and Diversey starting on Oct. 20.

I didn't go, but I heard the film was ok, but not a lot about the Chicago punk scene. Apparently, after the movie, there was an altercation in the lobby, involving Springa from SS Decontrol. He was offering to autograph copies of the poster from the movie. When no one there took him up on the offer, apparently he called everyone faggots or some such anti-gay epithet. Some one took exception to his rhetoric, and called him on it, and some sort of meelee ensued. I'm not sure if it became a fistfight, but Springa managed to make himself look pretty lame in the process. Marie talks about it on her Chicagopunkpix website.

I'm glad to hear that Chicago was underrepresented in the film because honestly there weren't any good Chicago hardcore bands. Sure the Effigies, Naked Raygun and Strike Under are considered by some as hardcore or proto hardcore, but really only the Effigies come close and they rejected most of the conformist lockstepping politics of that scene. The Effigies were actually a smart band whose politics were hard to pin down.

Hardcore was lame. There were some interesting bands but most of it was just a bunch of bald sweaty guys with their shirts off who suffered from inferiority complexes bumping into each other and beating up anyone smaller or alone. The incident with the guy from SSD at the theater, if true, simply proves my point. Apes in tee shirts.

Fuck you Chicago Hate Edge crew from the 1980's. Get a room already.

Q- How many hardcore kids does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

A- 13. 1 to screw it in and 12 to back him up.

I got a late text about this, but by then I was already in beer mode and watching the Bears. I fully regret not going to see Pegboy & Destroy Everything...

Protoolio - No love for Out of Order or Bhopal Stiffs? I'm not a huge hardcore fan myself, but both these bands are quite good in my book. I also think you can't fully judge a band by their fans. But then again since these bands were before my time, it's easier for me to say that. Cause assholes can ruin just about any show...
