100% NOT CRAP. Amazing place. Expensive though.
www.icelandair.com does good flight/hotel/excursion deals.
It's not that great in the winter, cos the daylight hours are really short. Go in the summer.
The Hotel Borg is superb, and spooky.

Why would anyone want to retire in the capital of Norway?

I went there with the Shellac, and I really liked it. Lots of insane drunks, everyone looks better than you do, and it's extremely expensive. Kind of bleak, but I enjoy that sort of thing. Delicious fish, for sure.

iceland is GREAT.
reykjavic is like a bjork video, but colder, or like the future, but slightly more expensive. but in a good way.
i hope to go back in the spring for a handful of days.

I went in February and it was great. Airfare, accomodations, etc. were half off for obvious reasons, but the weather was no worse than NYC at the same time of year.
The only serious expense was a car rental for one day to travel the coast. $600 or some shit like that (split 4x), but it was worth it, believe it or not. I'd go again in February in a minute.
If you do rent a car in the winter, bear in mind that the standards for highway maintenance/demarcation are different than Jersey, i.e., the Highway 12 that's featured prominently on the map could be a one lane road that follows a ridgeline, has no guardrails, is 700 feet above a frozen lake and currently covered with three feet of snow.

Reykjavic is great. A coupla things I noticed whilst there:
1. Nobody other than me and my wife paid for drinks with cash. Everyone else used credit cards.
2. Some people didn't drink alchohol in bars. They drank alchohol outside bars but not in.
3. If you go in November/December it doesn't get light until 11 am and gets dark at 3pm.
4. The outdoor swimming pools are great. And hot.
5. You can get soup inside a loaf. Think about it. Inside a loaf.
