I see that Chad has mastered Fugazi, Q and Not U, and a bunch of other great Dischord bands. Anybody have any opinion about his work or know about his rates? Thanks so much.

T.J. Lipple, Chad's partner at Silver Sonya, has mastered 2 full-lengths and 1 e.p. for my band. They are both very band-friendly and helpful, and I know from experience that T.J. does good work. I remember when I sent them our first cd, which was plagued by crappy recording, Chad recommended we record at Electrical Audio, which we recently did, finally.
Highly recommended.

Chad Clark is a good friend. that being said, he's very easy to talk to and is extremely hard working. My guess is that it's best not to quote a price here, considering that geiger's band's records are a bit older, and the scale may have changed since then. Regardless, they're both professionals.

I know that Chad is a very forthright guy who will take the proper time and care to do your work. Silver Sonya was also responsible for the Dischord remaster project (which I think was most, if not all of the catalog). Both guys have spent an inordinate amount of time running their business, which shares a space with Inner Ear Studio (Don Zientara's spot in Arlington).

Considering that both Chad and T.J. are also in great bands (Beauty Pill and Aloha) as far as "sonics" go, I would guess that they have experience in making sure the mastering Process didn't fuck up your dynamics.

Chad has also recorded some of your favourite records (Fugazi's "The Argument", the Dismemberment Plan catalog, Vic Chesnutt, etc. etc.), so he (and T.J.) would most definitely understand the mechanics between finished record and mastered record.

I recorded twice with TJ, not Chad, and was really happy with the whole process. TJ and I were about equally involved in the mixing process, with him doing most of the work up front and then me listening and making suggestions for refinement.

The mastering process, since it was just a single song (the time that was on my dime), was so very basic... he ran the stereo mix through a limiter that was used to stop something like a total of 3 or 4 peaks in the song. That's it. Which is exactly what I would have hoped for.

I have no hesitation in recommending Silver Sonya, though I only worked with TJ, not Chad. Chad was really nice the one time I spoke with him.
