I saw this film this weekend, and, for better or worse depending on your preferences, it is a drastic departure from what has been the classic Bond story-telling on film.
The formula is mostly the same, but after 2 minutes in, it was obvious that this film was greatly re-focused.
I have never read one of Ian Fleming's original novels, but from what I understand, this was the first novel, and subsequent novels became more 2-D, akin to the majority of Bond films made prior to Casino Royale.
I did enjoy seeing this film, and Daniel Craig's performance as Bond.
edit: Sorry for the incorrect forum placement - perhaps some fine moderator wants to jump this as appropriate.

I haven't seen it yet either, but I have read a few of the Fleming books, and I was told by people that this movie was much truer to the Bond/proto-Bond of the books than the films have portrayed him.
In the books, Bond is a bit of an asshole and very coldblooded. Sean Connery tapped some of this in a few of his movies, but in general, his suaveness and ladykilling abilities were played up because it would attract more moviegoers.
I look forward to seeing it, 'cos I love Daniel Craig.

I think a re-imagining of the character in this film franchise more akind to the novels is what this series needs. Of the original films Dr. No, From Russia with Love and Goldfinger were the best. Everything else got increasingly campy and gadget oriented after that. Lazenby, Moore, Dalton and Brosnan were all "meh" in my opinion.

Dalton could've been much better because, of all the post-Connery Bonds, only he had even a hint of cold-blooded edge. But it got lost in all the crap surrounding him (bad writing, mediocre direction, etc).
I'm really looking forward to seeing Casino Royale. I've been clamoring for a grittier, harder Bond for years and was excited to hear that's what Craig and company are delivering.

I've never looked forward to a James Bond film, except perhaps for Moonraker because it was in space and I was small. But I'll watch Daniel Craig in anything, he's brilliant. I want to see this film immediately.

I think I'll see it. The book is great, I've enjoyed all the Fleming books I've read but Casino Royale is my favorite.
