I had not heard his music before. The guy has some sort of identity crisis. It's like he can't decide if he would rather be Bob Dylan or Louis Armstrong.

I'm impressed at your ability to sum up the work of a man who has been making music for 30 years off of one song performed on live TV. Impressive.

I can sum up Tom Waits in two sentences.
Only slightly more interesting, and markedly less gae, than Nick Cave, and exactly equally overrated. He's so weird!!!

I left quite an "impression" on your mother last night.
Yeah sure he makes better music than I ever will and is loved by many. I will concede to this.
As someone unfamiliar with his work I thought it was a silly observation that made me laugh so I thought I would share my impression of this one song off of The Daily Show performance. I admitted to this going in. I said nothing to warrant such a harsh over-reaction.
You're right, though-- I'm an asshole.

I've heard a ton of Tom Waits. syntaxfree's summation is pretty accurate.

Do what BigC said and check out Rain Dogs. His work with Mark Ribot - marvelous abrasive guitarist - on that album is phenomenal.
