Are you a Crapper or a Non Crapper? I mean, generally speaking? Errr let me explain:

I find that in this little game of C/NC I am a man who gives the subject in question the benefit of his doubt. If a band has a couple of songs I like here and there amongst hours I really am not a fan of; a writer wrote one good book between reams of shit; a comedian was funny once some time in the past or a philosopher at least had the balls to write a polemic text - in these cases I vote Not Crap.

However, I imagine there are The Unforgiving amongst us - those who take no pity and make that band suffer for those truly bullshit three albums that followed the good one; cannot forgive the gaseous claptrap that followed such-and-such an author's decent romp; won't laugh with the once-funny man nor give the time of day to that mug what entertained the notion of Historical Materialism.

I do not wish to put it to thee that The Non Crapper is superior in his judgement to the Crapper, nor vice versa - I just wanted to know how things work around here. Are you a generous soul or a harsh yet fair critic? Should one excuse those atrocious 80s albums? Should one call bullshit on the artist who hasn't knocked something decent together in 20 years? Are you a CRAPPER of a NON-CRAPPER?

In cases where it's a double-edged decision, it depends how much the not crap stuff means to me. I think it's quite cathartic to come here and go through the new topics quickly dishing out craps on gut level first-thought instinct before seeing what anyone else has said. And when there's a lot of "but this thing and that record and she did do this and they did do that and meh meh meh" it's nice to bring the crap hammer - the crammer - down solidly. Harsh but fair.

And it always comes back the other way, anyway - you do a long post talking about the merits of this or that, and the next post is someone throwing a turd at you.

I guess as this poll is in crap / not crap then we have to come down on one side as is the tradition so I'm going to say I'm mostly a crapper. With waffles. I am a crapper full of waffles. Isn't that a pretty picture.

This is my beef with C/NC. Most things are NC, because if crap is to have any pejorative power, it can't just be thrown at everything. Like si-maro and many others, I'm sure, I tend to vote NC when something is/has produced one or more things I enjoy, regardless of strong negative qualities, like Billy Joel and Faith No More. I also vote NC when something is just average, because I don't think average is crap. I don't think C/NC does much to force a decision; "Not crap" (which could mean a wide range of things) is an easy way out. Good/Bad, Steer/Queer, and even Carrot/Stick are more challenging and precise binaries.

So I'm an NCer, and I assume that most people are. C/NC is ideal on a discussion board, but my binary decision-making scheme of choice remains 1 or 2.

Not Crapper here,

I've seen better days, and I've seen today. Perhaps on a better day I might feel more free with my innards, but today and in general I tend to hold it. If you've ever done anything I love or merely enjoy you get a not crap. If that is the only thing you have ever done, you still get a not crap for doing something cool. We all get old/bald/fat/droopy/whatever.

Crap for me is usually reserved for things that I can't avoid or ignore. Radiohead is crap not just because I don't enjoy them but because I am forced to not enjoy them quite often. Kenny G, smooth jazz, country music, Paris Hilton, Professional Baseball, automobiles, religious fundamentalist, etc. The list goes on.

1 or 2? that doesn't make any sense...0 or 1 would make sense if you're using numbers...or maybe even 1 or -1 which i guess would make even more sense as + or -...but regardless, i don't like 1 or 2...that's just dumb!

In a yes or no decision, C/NC usually works for me.

In more delicate matters, such as fighting with fashion photographer's assistants over the last box of Portra, I find that Rochambeau works very, very well.
