2I hate to be utterly typical, but I've always been a big fan of the Joel Peter-Witkin...

Cat I go to school with. His site is down at the moment (http://www.bobickerstaff.com/) but he's on flickr and also http://hiddenexposures.com.

Josef Koudelka is def. one of my favorites. Incredible sense of space and nice and inhuman/human/moody. Chaos is his best book, in my opinion. Black Triangle is sort of similar. But there are no websites that do his photos justice.
Superking takes great photos, too.
We have some other real good flickr's around here, too!

5My friend Kevin Rolly is awesome. Another friend doesn't have anything online, but her eye is incredible. I did some quid pro quo work for her, and now have one of her photos queued up as a CD cover, when I'm ready to release something appropriately dark.
As for known figures, my favorite is probably Man Ray, but I'm fond of work by Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, and Garry Winogrand as well.

Reminds me of that Ian Williams interview for Tubafrenzy. Inhuman patterns/oppresive structures that are aesthetically pleasing/technology/whatever the fuck.

8Wow. Everything everyone has posted here is great. I have a real hard time applying critical aesthetics to photography, feeling barraged by 'effective' commercial imagery 24-7. Makes drinking in visual imagery difficult...

10The oilgraphs are great; I rather wish we had one. We just had him over the other night before he went back to LA. Great guy, and often hilarious, too.
