There was an interview with Carol Kaye in tape op magazine probably two years ago. Carol played bass on a couple of Brian Wilson's Beach Boys productions.
As far as I remember from the article she played with a pick and dampend the strings with the palm of her hand.
Don't forget that people in the 60s were crazy. There must be reason why people say "The crazy 60s". I've no doubt that Brian Wilson put felt strips on his bass strings.

yeah, that works.
play a fender precision, with a pick. put something that works as a mute near the bridge of the bass. it sounds a bit like an upright.
do a lot of overdubs. some songs of the beach boys have like 3 basses playing at unison.

p-basses used to come with a foam rubber mute on them.

take a piece of foam rubber. stick it under the strings.

Beach Boys bass tone:

Muted P-bass. Felt works. A piece of T-shirt works. Foam rubber works. I use my palm and it acheives the same effect, but some people have a hard time doing that. Use a pick.

Overdub the same line with a baritione guitar, also muted.

On top of that, play the part on a strat, muted so much that all you get is the attack. Also try with a little compression.

That triple tracking will get you really close.
