As I was wandering down the road today "The Ship Song" by Nick Cave & Co. popped up on my iPod... I suddenly realised the production was so awful it could have been a Michael Bolton record...

Anyone else have favourite albums with appalling production but the songs are so good it doesn't matter?*

* I don't mean "bad" as in lo-fi etc. I mean horrific '80s production etc.

Prince's "Purple Rain" and the Cars' "Drive" are both songs that I really enjoy, where the recording is almost 100% unlistenable.

Hey, the only reason I can easily Kerble you on this one is because this very thread was my first-ever post on Electrical. How's that for nostalgia?

And if the Tindersticks had been his backing band for these records
i would die happy.

The first Silkworm record I guess.
If Steve had recorded those songs they would be listenable today methinks. The re-recording of 'Pearl Harbor' on 'His Absense Is A Blessing' blows the original away.

Your thread was more of a "shit, cheap recording, great songs", mine more of a "we spend 100,000 and it sounds like Keeny G" kinda thread...

and nostalgia is great.

big black records sound pretty awful out of context.

still though, those songs certainly carry that drum machine.
