We all make music for a reason.
We do it for money.
We do it for fame.
We do it for ourselves.
We do it for for <insert here>.
Why do you do it?

I don't know anymore. I often ask myself the same question. I suppose I just have to. I've long given up hope of making money or fame.
I do it because I have to make music. If I don't, I go mad.

"What do you hope to accomplish?" and, "Why do you do it?" are very different questions.
I wrote a lengthy reply, but deleted it realizing the question is what do you hope to accomplish, not what would you like to accomplish. I hope to create something I'm proud of. If others like it the fuzzies will increase.
Like most of us (I'd bet) I often ask why, and don't have an answer beyond that I have to.
It's hard for me to imagine an artist who wasn't affected by art in their life.

I often find myself reflecting my thoughts through other people's music. Sometimes I think I can do a better job of that than someone/group that doesn't know me. That's where things usually go horribly wrong, and I give up for a while.
Music is a pretty cyclical thing for me.

I totally understand this.
I think this is the case with almost all musicians or anyone that has a creative bone in their body.
You wanna know why I do it?
I do it because I believe.
The same way that the records that made me want to be a musician made me believe.
The belief that maybe your music can touch one other person besides yourself is what drives me more than anything.
Look at what Nirvana did for a generation of kids, including myself...

Music. By making music, I hope to accomplish music--even if my music is not necessarily "accomplished."

By the way, Thanks Chris for the Stephan Mathieu Album. I thought it was crap at first but i've just been laid on the beach (sorry guys) listening to it on my ipod. What a lovely tranquil mash of sounds it is! Salut!
I believe too. What I also believe is that the days of "stardom" and "fame" as we know it are ending. It's now possible to listen to whatever you want due to the internet and it's possible for the small guy to at least get a few people appreciating what they do. Even a couple people saying they like what I do keeps me going.
I also think things are going back to grassroots with live gigs. People seem to be appreciating unknown live acts a lot more. Well, especially in Australia. They don't seem to be hung up on image and gimmicks. This is good to let music be music!

I hope to make a great piece of art.
It's unlikely, but I'm the best hope I have.
*edit* It's also not a particularly clever medium to have chosen, given the fleeting and utilitarian nature/role of contemporary music.
