I looked and couldn't find a poll on this man.
I stand with hands gripping ankles, awaiting a Kerbling.

There are many things to dislike about old Rubber Plant, but I'll tell you , I can't do it. His famous quote that he'd rather "cut Mitch Easter's lawn than hear Steve Perry sing," his genuine love of Big Black, and the fact that he's a true music nerd (plus his involvement with the Cock Rock geniunses, back in the 70's) make me like this man.

He's made some vocal and lyrical choices that have bummed me out, but in the end, I think he's the real deal.

His solo box set just came out and it was the first time I could get a few cuts from his early records on iTunes. I liked Pictures at Eleven when it came out. Not sure how it stands up to freash ears these days, what with the synth pads and all, but I've been enjoying it out of nostalgia.

So, tear me a new one if you must. I figure this guy is as polarizing as The Macca.

Years and years ago, I remember reading an interview with him in which he said that, if he were starting a new band at that time, it would probably sound something like Husker Du.

I saw him live in the early 90s. During one song in his set, a movie showed in the background of Plant wielding a sword. Not crap for that alone.

He knew how to work an arena. It was a fun show, even if I don't care for the solo albums.

Ooh, and not crap while I'm at it. He has a nice pair of lungs, I think he's funny, and he seems like a nice fellow.

I feel like digressing here. I have a flamboyant writer friend called Raj who, apart from a love of the Velvet Underground, really does not like rock. He's a big Prince fan. This keeps him happy, so fair do's. He didn't tell the following story as a big anecdote, rather I dragged the information out of him after he mentioned a key point in passing.

A few years ago he was staying with his sister, her husband and two young daughters, and he used to pick up the eldest from school in his car. He did this a few times and got to talking to another, older chap with long hair and a very pretty young wife.
"So sir, what do you do?"
"I play guitar. How about you?"
"I'm a writer. Man, it's tough making a living, isn't it?"
"Yeah. I guess I've done alright."
Raj tells him "Good for you," and pats him on the shoulder - or makes some other conspiratorial movement - to congratulate him for making money from art. When Raj demonstrated this to me, I immediately thought that I would've been a little patronised by this movement had I not known Raj.
He continued:
"So, were you in a band or something?"
"Yes."
"I like music. What were they called? Go on, tell me..."
"Led Zeppelin."
"Hey, I think I've heard of them. You're pretty well known, aren't you?"
"We did ok."
"Did you ever meet Prince?"

Raj did not have a clue who they were until he told me and our mutual Zep-nut friend James.

I do front a band like that.
We're called Heavy Light.
Not only do we steal old blues songs from people that will totally lose a lawsuit to us, but we even go so far as to
...kill...
...them...
...softly...
...with...
...their...
...song.
