I'm thinking about getting my JCM 800 2204 modded with the following mod from Voodoo to achieve more gain and more of an overall metal sound.

“HG-Mod”: $395.00

Specs:

* All Modifications are exclusive to Voodoo Amps™.
* Recommended for rock/metal/heavy/extreme metal players
* Total of four (4) gain stages after the modification - tons of useable gain on tap!
* The EQ section will be more flexible over all as well as musical sounding
* Bottom end/Bass frequencies are increased while still being tight a focused – not loose/woofy/tubby
* The gain is articulate and defined – No fuzzy/buzzy characteristics
* All frequencies are balanced out so the amp is more even sounding over all as well as responsive
* You can get a cranked tone at lower volumes as well as greatly increased sustain
* The amp will be able to cut through the mix a lot better both live as well as in the studio
* Harmonic structure so harmonics leap off from the fretboard with ease
* Recommended Add-On Controls: Bottom ($49.95), or Push/Pull Bottom ( $69.95), Global ($49.95) push/pull Gain Boost ($29.95), Mid-Slice ($49.95)
* Voodoo Circle-V Logo available in chrome or gold for $34.95 plus installation – logo is solid metal, not plastic
* Voodoo Mods™ retain your amps resale value verses decreasing it.
* Turn around times & rush service.

does anyone know anyone that has had this done? Any opinions on Voodoo mods? Is there any other places that do mods that people would recommend? what are the pros and cons other than potential decrease in value? thanx...

I have a hard time trusting anything related to guitars that uses the word "voodoo."

I have had two of my amps modded by voodoo amps, and I can vouch that they were high quality and great sounding mods. I didn't really get the mods that you are thinking about, though, more of a "here is what I want this to sound like can you do that" kind of thing.

The first mod I got was to put a post-phase inverter master volume on a traynor yba-1a, as well as a few minor adjustments to lessen the booming quality of the bass and ice-pickiness of the treble. This amp sounds amazing now. It's seriously the best master volume overdrive I have ever heard, and the amp cuts through any mix like a muthafuck.

I also sent a Marshall JMP 2003 out that was kind of "meh" sounding as the result of a lot of components falling quite a bit off from spec. He recapped it, installed a few of the tone mods you mentioned there (stuff that makes the volume and gain sweep more linear, better more focused bass, etc) and bumped up the gain a little, but nothing to make it extreme metal high gain (no extra gain stages or anything, just changed some existing components) and I didn't get any of that push/pull pot stuff. The amp is now, to me (which is the most important thing since it's my amp) one of the best sounding 2203's I've ever heard. It's like they should sound, I would say, ideally.

So yeah, the theme to this post is that I have not heard many amps that are better to my ears than my amps, so I am happy with that guy's work.

thanks for the information tbone. I actually went another direction all together. My bass player sent an email to Lee Jackson (pretty famous amp mod guy) because he lives in Austin and asked if he still did work on amps. A week later we get an email back from him telling me to drop it off and he'll go over it. It just got dropped off today, so we'll see how it goes etc....
