Help on Purchasing Microphones

1
I am looking to spend around $1000 on microphones for my first recording setup. I am looking for advice on what types, brands or specific mics i should look at getting. Any advice at all would be helpful as this is going to be a long selecting process because i have to wait until the summer to get them when i will be back from college and get a job for the $$. thank you in advance.

Be more specific. How many mics are you looking to get? For what purposes are you going to use them for?

Use the search function at the top of the page. People ask this question every month or two. The answers generally stay the same, we're not holding out on anybody with the really good sugguestions. These are threads I found barely getting to the second page of results.

Type "pair overheads" into the serach function.
Type "AKG C1000" into the search function.
Type other combinations of "overheads", "condenser", "pair", etc.

Make sure you check the "Search for all terms" box before searching. It might also help to limite your results to the Tech Room.
There is a ton of information on this forum about this subject.

I'll just go ahead and tell you that I own an AKG C1000s, and I like the way it captures cymbols. Its 'bright' but not too 'harsh'. A single C1000s can be had for about $100 depending on where you look, and its a quality mic. I'm sure there are small diaphragms which are a bit more expensive and do a better job as overheads, but I really like AKG stuff.

But, use the search function.

i used audiotechnica AT4040 lastely to record guitars. yes, it is audiotechnica...
anyway, it sounded pretty better than i expected it to, and as a single mic to record guitar amplifier, i would advice it better than e609 or sm57 classic.
but i supose it costs a bit more, never checked in fact.

I have a couple of these mics and depending on what quality you want to produce these babies are fucking awesome value for money. You can sometimes pick them up second hand for penuts and they sound fine for a wide range of uses. We actually recorded all our demos just using those mics on drums and amps and it sounds pretty nicey.
