Octave pedal + mic?

Ok, people, I got another ignant question for the tech room:

How would it sound if you ran a vocal mic through an octave pedal?

I'm trying to get a crazy low voice (think Yello here) live, and I'm wondering what the cheapest way to do it would be.

Any other ideas?

There used to be a toy that you could talk into and it made your voice sound like the mysterons on Captain Scarlett...maybe try one of those?

I've done it with a whammy pedal.

A voice is monophonic so it shouldn't be a problem.

Make sure to call your friends and pretend you're satan. That's about the only fun I had with this "project".

Octavers sound like shit on vox unless you get a stupidly expensive model. Better off with a pitch shifter, based on the way they produce the tone compared to an octaver. Plus a lot of octavers mix the original signal and I'm guessing that's not what you want. The cheapest pitch shifter I know of comes in a rack unit with a fuckload of other effects, and can be had for $99. It's the Behringer Virtualizer and it is a shitload of fun.

Does everybody do this? That's the first thing I did with my Whammy pedal!

I've done it with a Whammy Pedal and a Boss Super Shifter. Both worked great. You probably know someone with a Whammy.

Or, how about recording it and doing something with a VST (assuming you can record to computer)?

I used the Boss OC-2 on vocals once. It didn't yield the desired effect. A pitch shifter would be better for vocals. However, if you run any sort of samples with speech on them through an octave pedal, you get some cool rumbling and buzzing sounds.

I've been there before, too. It doesn't sound uncool, but you're not really going to get anything to sound like you want it to.

This sounds pretty good though, yeah?
