Hi Ben.

I used one for some female vocals (on the Electrelane album, which Too Pure should be releasing this year). I thought they were fine examples of the ribbon type -- slightly more midrange energy than the 4038 at normal singing distances, but with a strong low-end emphasis. I would say that tonally they were reminiscent of an RCA77dx, with slightly higher output. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again in this capacity. I didn't try them on anything else yet (I don't know how they would handle high levels or a lot of HF energy, for example, and I don't know how different loading from the preamp would affect them), and we can't afford to buy anything right now, so further experimentation will have to wait.

I used this mic on trombone during a horn overdub session a few months ago. Overall, I thought it sounded really fuckin' good. Certainly looks a bit like a 77DX, though if I'm not mistaken Mr. Dooley is actually manufacturing them from a supply of NOS 44BX ribbon material. I didn't have time to directly A/B it with any other mics, but auditory memory (admittedly not the most reliable of the senses) tells me it had more extended HF response than most of the "vintage" ribbons I've used (and the 4038), an impression which I might attribute simply to the newness of the components. It was quiet and had plenty output loaded to a 250 Ohm preamp. In any case, for a thousand bucks list price, it seems like a great buy. Oh, and the tromboner liked the sound a lot too. (Some more dick for y'all).
