GP9 and 900 are about the same price, does anyone prefer one over the other? Why? Also, are the bias settings going to be similair?
thanks
EMTEC vs. Quantegy
2I prefer 900, mostly because Quantegy tapes won't be available in the near future.
I've just started to use the new RMGI tape and from my limited experience I'd say that it runs a bit smoother on the machine. I haven't A/B tested it against Quantegy, so I can't say anything about sound differences.
You'll have to re-bias your machine if you decide to use a different brand or type of tape

3the slitting on emtech/rmg tapes is far superior to quantegy's. i always thought my machine was whack when i was using gp9 because there would be all sorts of popped strands and clumsy packing, but then i put some 911 on there and the pack was tighter than tiger.

4i have been mixing to GP9 for the last 2 years. today i set my machine up for rmg 900. i use an otari mtr 10 , 1/4" at 30 ips mostly. the rmg 900 (batch B O99 383 4 21), kinda kicked ass. the transport was super smooth and quiet, it cut really nice (razor), packed well, handled noise and dynamics well. i liked the GP9, the transport needed a bit of upkeeping, i felt like it had great low and low mid compression...i am looking forward to the rmg 900. i had zero shedding or build up though some minor dusting with GP9. the playback and conclusion: my machine and ears are happy. i hope this is a standard.

5I prefer the EMTEC to Quantegy, for reasons already stated. Smoother run, it is packed better than Quantegy, etc.
Go for the RMG 900, but yes, as with any new tape, re-bias is necessary, but an easy procedure.

6I had a client bring some in for the first time recently. I did experience the residue issues others have mentioned. It left a fine dust that when wiped with a finger smeared... cleanup after transfer was longer and grimier than usual.
But I hear this is a batch-to-batch issue. If that problem clears up, it seems like a decent enough brand. No issue whatsoever with the audio -- the reels were 1/4" @ 15ips and sounded great.

7I just got a whack batch of RMGI. Had to send it back. It left an unholy amount of grime on my transport.
