I like the cyber-punk feel of the first half, but the last half isn't really for me.

No love for akira huh? It was my introduction to the Japanimation/manga scene and I loved it. I'll admit that it missed loads of story compared to the comics, but it set the bar pretty damn high considering the technology of the time. The soundtrack was a bonus as well. Very much not crap in my opinion.
