the "playing in a band you don't like, for fun" thread got me thinking about one-off fun projects that turn out better than the 'for real' band. for instance, i know people who are more into Grinderman than the majority of the Bad Seeds stuff.

i love XTC, but i think i like the Dukes of Stratosphear stuff even more. can you think of any examples?

Annoying yuppie rockers !!! had a truly incredible pop/electronica group called Out Hud who actually created one of the better albums of the last few years called 'Let Us Never Speak of It Again'.

I agree completely.

As I said in the Contortions thread, I love the Raybeats (the band backing James Chance) a lot more than the Contortions.

I liked Eight Eyed Spy better than Teenage Jesus and The Jerks.

I wonder if these qualify? The Dukes were XTC under a different name. Does Klaatu count?

they had the guitarist's brother play drums, who was probably not 'professional' enough for their serious albums (which is part of its charm). i think that qualifies.

While it doesn't beat out the original band, Consonant (first album) measures up to Mission of Burma's best work.

Also, Breeders > Pixies.

Holy Sons better than Grails

solo Jason Molina records better than Magnolia Electric Co.

Lichens better than T.V. on the Radio (cannot understand the appeal of this band...)

Mark Eitzel "Songs of Love" better than any AMC album

I've heard other people say the same thing.

Still, it would take a MONUMENTALLY GREAT album from Out Hud to eclipse my dislike for !!! enough that I could hear the former with honest ears.

Wow, I did not know that. It wasn't the XTC drummer, then?

I'm hearing the "Mole in The Ministry" in my head right now. I'm gonna dig out my CD of all their works right now. Thanks for reminding me.
