i know this doesn't have anything to do with electrical, but damn. i almost forgot how great this record sounds. i listened to it yesterday for the first time in a while (all the way through) and it took me to a different place. don't get me wrong, i know steve has written an article about the impact of that record, and that record is/was one of my favorite records back in the early 90's.
so yeah, just thought i would mention something about to see how everyone else sees this record. one of the best of all time.
on a different subject. i just heard the newest record from "the magic band", and i must say it is brilliant. i saw that bob weston recorded it. sounds great. a must have.
take it

I completely agree. If I were to do something geeky like put together a "top ten of all time" list, Spiderland would certainly be on it. Also, if you like some of the moodier pieces from that album (like "Good Morning, Captain"), I am positive that you will like The For Carnation's eponymous album from 2000. It was recorded by John McEntire of Tortoise fame, but some work was done at Electrical Audio. I'm not sure exactly how much.
It features Slint members Brian McMahon and (on one song) Britt Walford on drums. The vocals are largely sotto voce and almost Cohen-esque in their delivery, and the mood the album creates is virtually unparalleled.
But yeah...Slint were great. Spiderland is great. Poodles, however, are not.

3i've never really discussed this record with others, or heard much about it...but the first time i heard it, i totally fell in love with it. when i bought it at the record store, the guy ringing me up said, "isn't this just the greatest record ever?" to which i replied, "one of them, yes."
another time, more recently, i was downtown and saw some guy walking by in an orange bootleg slint shirt, with the picture of the spider on it. he turned out to be a major nutball, but talking to a total stranger on the street about this band was really cool at the time.

4I totally agree. Spiderland is quite simply an amazing album. The engineering suits the songs so well that I don't even listen (as I mostly do with rock records) to try to figure out how it was recorded, I just enjoy it as a very musically satisfying whole.
The For Carnation's eponymous album was also superb. Are they even together still? I would love to hear some more from them. With all the Chicago dwellers on this board, there's got to be someone here who knows the answer...

5I know Brian was living in LA for a few years now. Maybe even like 6 or 7 years. I believe he is still there. I know he has done a few For Carnation tours from there. The band has been pretty different the four or so times I have seen him play. I agree, his music in general has a lot of that vibe and feeling you got from Spiderland, more so than the other x-Slint folk I would say. I guess the mood of Spiderland was closer to what Brian makes. Although Dave Pajo's output is amazing also and Britt's Evergreen was a shining moment for humans. Oh, and King Kong makes me wet my pants.

6I was 12 when Spiderland came out, and didn't hear it until I was 20. Funny how at the time I was like, "Oh cool, this is David Pajo's old band."
Yeah, amazing amazing record. And also the For Carnation, very good. It's like Slint without the explosions...very intense. Needless to say, I'm a big fan of Papa M's Live From The Shark Cage album too.

7Thinking back, sometimes one thinks that things could only happen one way and that such an album as 'spiderland' had to happen, but it is a miracle to treasure. It is a turning point. I am sure many of us have wondered if they would play together again but I prefer it the way it's been. They've diversified. They are different musicians now, from what I can gather. Not many bands can boast having left such a clear blueprint on our/my memory.

8Yes, it is a great record.
So many bands tried to mimic them, and they all failed.
I even heard cover of "Washer" that was so bad I was embarrassed to listen.
I am always amazed how shallow people can get and how they try to jump on someone elses energy train...
Have you heard their 10" with two songs...b/w photo with three guys in snow and blood? That's great too.
No matter what other people think, I like "tweez" too. It is a record I will put on my turntable.
