Distorted bass tone

I have very little experience recording bass guitar. Most of the bands I have recorded in my short career haven't had a bass player and the one that did asked me to "make it sound like korn" - not a good learning experience.

I'd like to get a nice, slightly overdriven tone without losing low end. So far I've taken the same approach as i do with guitar- stick a 421 on the amp and run it right into the board. any tips? what do you guys use to get a good growly bass tone? I just want to try out some new techniques.
thanks!
