The entire article is pretty informative and cool...lots of Milwaukee stuff I didn't know.

In any case, of course I'm gonna vote Chicago because I fucking hate Milwaukee...basically a dead city despite what Wisconsin natives will tell you...I'd definitely take Madison in a heartbeat over Mil-town as far as Wisconsin goes. There's a couple Madison bands I'm really excited about, but nothing from Milwaukee has really done it for me so far (note: I have yet to hear Oil Tasters). Additionally, I'm biased because Chicago is easily my favorite city in the entire country...and I've been around the block boys and girls (though never to 'Frisco or L.A....gaping holes in my experience).

If you "hate Milwaukee," i'm not sure how one could change your mind. I love it, but then again, i pretty much have a 24-hour boner for all things Wisconsin, with the exception of Tommy Thompson, Joe McCarthy, or anti-Hmong racism, and since most of those things aren't in Milwaukee, they really don't apply here.

I think Milwaukee has incredible bands, although they do swim amongst a lot of mediocre ones. Like any music scene. I mean, Chicago has Touch & Go and Shellac and Bear Claw and Bang! Bang! and so much other great stuff, but it also produced Billy Corgan and Al Jourgensen, so whatever. Equal ratios of crap and not crap, just on a larger scale. S'cool.

I grew up in a shit town of 1000 people, then thought i had escaped when i went to Oshkosh for college. After 10 years of living in Oshkosh, i got the fuck out of dodge and traded up to Milwaukee. It's not as huge and daunting (to me) as Chicago, but fuck it, it's big and busy enough for me. Plus i have access to shit-tons of fish frys, brewery tours, encased meats, cheap beer, and i can walk to any decent venue in Riverwest. And it's pretty easy at this point to call the Cactus Club or Mad Planet and ask if we can open for Band X when they come to town. I probably won't be here forever, but for now, Milwaukee is just my speed. If you're down with Chicago, good for you. If you're down with Madison, you're a fucking hippie.

I'm not exactly "down" with Madison (Madison as the world knows it, anyway), but I did find a few incredible bands...I never expected to find shit in Madison after a little while.

Madison is Chicago's version of Olympia, WA. Seattle is a little under 1 million people if I'll recall...Chicago has 3 million. Olympia has 35,000 people and Madison is between 200,000-250,000. The "music kids" in Madison aren't cool at all...they're so touchy and weird. It's not even a matter of being misunderstood...I just mean they're weird. I try to behave in a business-like/professional sort of manner, and it freaks them the fuck out. They're flighty and not up front about anything. Here (Chicagoland), I generally get "yes" and "no" answers. If Chicagoans don't like an outsider, then that outsider might get the silent treatment, but on the whole it's extremely genuine and honest here (in my opinion).

Madison's younger types...they're not tee-totalers like the Calvinists in Olympia (Madison is still Wisconsin, after all) but they are lame and cliquey as fuck. In the Hi-Fi, you seem to lack the sort of passive-aggressive pussy-dom that has characterized my time in Wisconsin. Salut!

The amazing thing about the Madison bands (not the kids, mind you...I'm talking median age...28-29) is that the members of the good bands come from all over the country...they're generally not locals (except for Czarbles...amazing band) and they somehow just wind up in Madison for a while. This has been good for me because these bands then went and spread out all over the place...NYC, Chicago, Boston, Providence, SF (soon probably)...Colony of Watts' two members that were in the band since the beginning came from Juneau, Alaska for chrissakes. Madison bands don't give a fuck, because nobody plans on sticking around for that long (even if they are inevitably sucked into "the womb").

In Milwaukee, I'm always struck by the inferiority complex that seems to come standard with bands in that scene. Additionally, the most popular stuff is a part of this hyperactive rock movement...it's like later Royal Trux, but way more busy and "ironic." Call Me Lightning is the most "serious" of the bands in Milwaukee, and even they carry that sort of "we love keytar!" aesthetic...just below the surface. I remember reading that one of the CML dudes really likes Springsteen...if this is true, I really wonder why he likes Springsteen. Is it because Springsteen is ridiculous and over the top at times?...or is it because he was a serious songwriter with semi-consistent flashes of Bob Dylan brilliance?

At least we're not talking about Minneapolis...I'd probably really get reamed if I even got started...at least STNNNG and the Blind Shake kick ass.

Also, the vote is currently tied. Milwaukee people like them some Milwaukee. I'm sure there's reasons to like it...

Hipsters no longer live on the East side as its to much to live there, try bayview (same apartment = about $650) or Riverwest (same apartment between $550 and $ 450) just to clear that one up...
