Thunderdome: Small Faces or Faces?

Faces. I like Small Faces stuff OK, but it's just less my personal type of music. If I want mod, I will listen to the Jam (OK SORRY PURISTS PLEASE JUST PRETEND I WAS KIDDING & WE'LL ALL JUST MOVE ON); but I mainly prefer rock & roll, & that's where the Faces are a viking. Scrappy, rambunctious, scruffy & ramshackle. Good times & generally (from what I can tell, many decades later) pretty unpretentious.

In fact (ready?): I'd take the Faces over the Stones almost any day. Unless it's "Some Girls." That's a tough call.

Plus, if it weren't for "Ooh La La," I never would have been inspired to explore the catalogue of Ronnie Lane, which has provided many rewards. My favorite is "Annie," from the Townshend/Lane hott collabo. Lovely song.

Faces!

Oh, I forgot -- London Quireboys? Yeah, I think I remember them. Sort of a blip on the musical landscape for a minute in the 80s? 90s, maybe? Huh.

Say, I remember another band the Faces "influenced" (& by "influenced," I mean "laid out a blueprint that was ruthlessly & meticulously xeroxed"); ever hear of THE BLACK CROWES?

Both are great, but after a long weekend with The Faces Long Player as the soundtrack, I've gotta give it to Rod and The Regular-Sized Faces. That record refuses to leave my turntable once its placed there. It shows up with its suitcase and says it'll only be there for the night, and next thing you know its a full week of "Sweet Lady Mary".
That dog won't hunt, monsignor.

I like some of the Black Crowes non-radio-hit stuff. The boys in the band would say that they were more influenced by Small Faces, but I think that they sound more like Rod and Ronnie.

Hmm, lessee.

I guess we're leaving out Rod's disco-whore shit out of the picture here, since it really does have nothing to do with the Faces.

Do we count at least some of Every Picture Tells A Story as an unofficial Faces record? Because if we were, then I'd pick the Faces without a second thought. I was practically raised on that record as a little kid. I actually could not listen to "Reason To Believe" as a little kid for the longest time because it would make me cry. Which makes it all the more depressing that Rod turned into such a fucking blonde skank after that album. I'm actually still mad at him for how he dared to waste his career so indolently with such talent, which is why I will laugh heartily at any joke about him or his voice (that line of vockins' about rod's voice is classic). So I'm not forgiving him for that, but he made some brilliant records.

I do really like the stuff I've heard by the Small Faces - Marriott was truly one hell of a singer, and a pretty fucking grungy guitarist for the '60's: songs like "Tin Soldier" and "Song of a Baker" rock really really fucking hard and have great tunes to match, and that amazing cover of "You Need Love" pretty much was the defining inspiration for "Whole Lotta Love."

Still, there's the Small Faces, and then there's "Stay With Me." Hmm...this is tough, but I'm gonna go with the Faces. I think. I'm not going to vote yet.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.
