My enjoyment of The Libertines is being wrecked by stupid London NME journos, but it has to be said they encourage it themselves. I always think it's a shame when a band so readily gets into bed with the press the way they have done (also J'accuse The Clash) but beneath all the "we love Pete, he's like, really into smack and on the edge" hack wankery I actually think they are a really good band.

So not crap, but only just.

They write good songs. NOT CRAP, maybe carp, but definitely NOT CRAP.

NOT CRAP. Not genius either but not crap. A few all-out cracking songs, a fair wodge of average ones.

A lot of the vitriol slung at them from outside England is entirely based upon the immense amount of hype they have received. This is understandable; I believe in some circles it's known as the "Menswear Effect".

And they 'give' astonishing press, by accident or design. Drugs, redemption, oddball behaviour, bonded friendship, breakups. The public want the big old-fashioned stories. That's life, for the history of human civilisation.

Rather them than Keane or Secret Machines.

I love the band, i just think it is sad that NME is once again ruining a band. So as long as you stay away from NME, great band.
