Not just a frivolous topic, I swear.
The meth thread makes me wonder if heroin is no longer viewed as the most evil of all evils.
Apart from smoking heroin once or twice when I was a kid I have no real experience with hard drugs. I am interested in the truth about them though (as opposed to simple reactionary scaremongering).
I know lots of famous artists have functioned for a long time whilst addicted to heroin; is or could the same thing be true for meth?
I don't even know if you can get meth in England.
Anyway, which is worse?

3I hate both drugs, but I think it's easier to maintain on a heroin addiction, rather than on a meth addiction.

4I think there are a lot more noticeable effects in a shorter amount of time with crystal meth. There are probably a lot of junkies out there who can at least maintain.
Meth is also way more of a problem in certain areas of the U.S., due to its' relative cheapness and ease of amateur manufacture. I used to go to college in Iowa and meth was absolutely no joke there. Meth is also insanely addictive. One hit of strong enough meth can make you addicted for life. I don't know for sure - so please correct me if I am wrong - but I do not think heroin, unless it is really pure, can do that: I believe that it takes slightly more to get addicted to heroin that strongly.
Both drugs are evil, filthy, utterly degrading chemicals, though, and it's equally disgusting to be addicted to either. Heroin's got a kind of pathetic mystique about it, though, since so many great musicians got addicted to it. The rich, gifted person's drug of choice. You can play like Keef if you shoot up! What a bullshit stereotype. Go to rotten.com/library and look up the article on meth. You'll see some pictures there that will make you nauseous.
I am sure that the only reason I believe meth to be a slightly worse drug is because of its' cheapness and its' addictiveness, and because of the area where I used to go to school in. I don't know enough about heroin to make an informed statement about whether it is a worse drug or not.
At another level, though, these posts about "which drug is worse" or "which insult is worse" are really pretty fucking stupid, and I wish they'd stop.

Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

5I've certainly hated what I've seen happen to people I knew who used heroin, in fact, it's the primary reason I stopped going to clubs. So many people I knew became addicted, some died, it was horrible.
I also found out, much later after the fact, of people I knew who had a problem for a while who came out of that pit, and put themselves back together.
The few people I've heard of, through my girlfriend, who used meth, went downhill even quicker from what I understand. Total paranoia, no ability to stop whatsoever. And, no eventual cleaning up either.

6Are there "functional" meth addicts?
I don't know, but I doubt it.
One is made from processing opium poppies.
The other is made out of lye, fuel line cleaner, and cold medicine.
Think about that. I doubt there is "high quality meth."
I think the idea that smack has been usurped as the scourge of society is probably correct.
I've never done either.

Yep, lotta stewardesses. Big with them.
It's what coke used to be for a lot of people, especially down south.
The chicks do bumps of it during the day to stay awake and as a diet aide, I am not shitting you that's why they say they do it...to stay thin. Now, I can't knock them for wanting to stay thin but c'mon...
Meth is a WAY worse habit to get into, in my book.
I've known both types and, yeah I'd not want to go to a meth person's house and hang out, EVER.

9i'm not sure. they are both pretty disgusting. on one hand the composition of meth is scary and it seems otherwise okay people, once addicted, become huge degenerates really quickly (and smell bad). on the other hand, i've known one associate who tried heroin for the very first time and died. so maybe heroin is the bigger evil since in many cases you don't get the opportunity to recover from the addiction, or even earn one.
