As long as it's a classic tube head, what's the difference? Ampeg V4 and V4B...the B version just doesn't have reverb and maybe one other small feature....the amps are identical. Fender Bassman, sounds better on gtr than bass....Sunn Model T heads....just about any old vintage Sunn tube head for that matter sounds great on gtr or bass. You just need more watts to push a bass properly, so make sure it's got plenty.
But then again, there's nothing sweeter than an Ampeg Fliptop and it's around 50w.

the v4b has an 'ultra low' switch. i think it drops the voicing of the 'bass' part of the eq down an octave.

otherwise, they are the same, and i use regular v4s myself for bass. i find that i must dime the 'bass' knob, but so...what.

i just played several shows thru an orange guitar head. it sounded swell. much better than whatever bass amp each club had around.

The V4 also has input sensitivity rocker switches for each input. Whopee! Apparently, the "ultra high" switch is also implemented differently on the two, though you could probably go a lifetime without needing it.

Tim - does "to dime" as a verb mean "to turn all the way up (as though to 10)"? That's a new one...

Well, yeah, the rocker switches are probably set to different frequencies and the ultra switch....i forgot about that. Usually though that crap never gets used anyway. I do play with my control knobs on my amps, but never touch the rocker switches.
FYI, I've got a V4 as well as a combo VT-40, which is the 50w version in a 4x10 cab. I've also got a '66 fliptop that rules for bass.
