Trident Dream Series Console

Hi all, I've searched through all the Trident threads and couldn't come up with the goods on this console.

Does anybody have any experience on these? I believe they are relatively new additions to the Trident family.

Or info on Mr. Oram himself/the desks being manufactured by the newly formed Trident Audio Ltd name, etc.

The website looks really cheap...www.oram.co.uk

...with taglines like "When your DAW needs to THAW" makes me cringe a bit.

I'd like to buy something at the end of the year. I drool over the Wunderbar Wonder Console...for 12 channels I'd have to wait another 1.5 years so I thought maybe cut my losses and go with the Dream which isn't obviously as high end as the Wonder but half the cost.

Thanks all

Hi,

this haven't been answered so I will try to throw my thoughts about it.
Both John Oram and Michael Toft worked at Trident at some point of the company existence. They both claim to be head engineers at Trident, but I have no idea if this is true. Anyhow, both these guys are using the name of trident with their products to show how great their products are.

I think that for that price you could buy some second hand console which wouldn't fall from these two.

I've never heard the Dream console nor the Toft console. Btw, I don't remember seeing much reviews on the dream console, I guess it means something.

Hi Eliya, thanks for the post.

I've spoken with the sales rep and apparently these are "modern" transformerless designed, surface mounted mixers made in China.

Oh..and they're "modular" in that they are grouped in sections of four.

From the rep:

1) Metal pots are used throughout the console.
2) The components are mostly surface mount however some IC's use conventional methods for servicing purposes.
3) The console is modular in four channel blocks and each channel contains two signal paths one for monitoring and one for the main channel.
4) The EQ and Mic Pre are based on the original Series 80 console.

It costs £9000 for 16 channels.

I wouldn't bother with any of the current production Trident related boards (either the Trident/Oram or Toft Audio offerings.)

£9000 seems pretty steep for a far east console that's not even fully modular. Having spent the day dismantling and re-assembling one of the Toft consoles I can tell you it's not worth the hassle. £9k will buy you a decent sized used Calrec, Studer, Amek or similar. If you're into Trident stuff you'd get a 65 or 75 for that easy, or maybe even a smaller Daking, I don't remember how much they are.

Hi Tarandfeathers, that's some good advice. I have no doubt a Studer 900 series would be a much more wise investment and they're £3K here.

So what kind of work do you do that enables you to work on stuff like that? Sounds really cool.

Also, how did the Toft look underneath the hood?

Cheap is about the most descriptive answer I can give. I don't think there's anything in that desk that couldn't have been done better. I work as a technician in an educational establishment. Not really that exciting...

That's cooler than my job and way more exciting.

Shame because the Toft and Dream fit that small console niche so well without killer mula the other new contenders demand - API 1608, Wunderbar, Tonelux, Neve 5088's all top notch stuff but serious dosh.

Is it the trident from your studio Zom?

No, a bit different. Seems like a reasonable price.
