david royer wrote:I used a Jensen DB/E transformer since it fits neatly into the space occupied by the MXL’s transformer and it is electrically suitable for the job. It is not quite a match for the U-47’s transformer, but it is better than the transformers in such tube mics as the Schoeps 221B and the Neumann KM54, since it won’t saturate with loud low frequency signals.

4AFAIK there were two mods for this mic -- an FET and a tube version. Which were you referring to?

5the transformer is removed in the FET version... hence the FET output circuit...
i did a/b the 2001 FET mod with a mojave 200 (i would expect to be in the same family as the royer tube mod of the MXL2001), same cable, pre, etc: the mojave had better tonal balance and higher spl. the difference was easy. i have not ran out an bought the mojave though.
i'd like to see the MXL LDC and SDC tube "kits" available. sourcing parts is a drag.
here's the link to the tapeop article: http://www.prosoundweb.com/recording/ta ... 25_1.shtml
i have a feeling if you called jensen and brought the whole royer thing up, you'd get what you want. dave royer seems like a good source to send an email to...
good luck!
