I [heart] the stoicism born of centuries in the path of deadly storms:
Most Jamaicans heeded the pleas of its leaders to seek shelter, but some did not.
Local radio stations broadcast ominous reports of empty shelters.
"You can't run away from natural disaster," said Oran Hall, 32, a grocery store owner in Port Royal, a sand spit near Kingston. Faded life vests hang from front doors and small fishing boats crowd the beachfront.
"You may run into Kingston and get gun shot," he said. "I am staying here. I prefer to die by natural disaster than to die by man killing me."
"We are going nowhere," Byron Thompson said in Port Royal, settled by pirate Henry Morgan in the 16th century. "In fact, if you come by here later today you will see me drinking rum over in that bar with some friends."

I'm really sorry to hear that, whitetrash. I hope he's taking precautions and somewhere safe, and that he has plenty of water and food at hand.
Linky! It's probably going to hit land and dissipate, so it'll be not quite as terrorizing.

He is staying with the Zapatistas in a hut in the middle of the jungle. They are some pretty tough rebels so I think he will be alright.

I've been following it. I rather like storms. Actually, when I turn 60 I plan to become a storm-chaser. Anyway...
I believe it's only the 28th cat5 in recorded meteorological history. It's early in the season, without the aid of the middle of a warm gulf, and Dean still had the energy to make cat5. That doesn't bode well for the rest of the season.
I wonder if the Gulf has warmed that extra degree or two....

CNN had on its front page a few days ago, "Strengthening Dean Claims First Fatality."
I had a moment of wide-eyed shock while I tried to figure out what made Howard Dean finally snap and kill a man.
