So, Marsup and I played our dreaded Elbo room show last night. For those of you not in Chicago, I use the word dreaded because the Elbo room is not seen as a hip place to place. However, all in all it was a great time. The place was packed and the sound guy was really cool.

This first band, Then King hen were great. They were from Portland, nice guys, and played a good set. Influences on their myspace state: fugazi, sonic youth,mclusky,murdercitydevils, dirty three, jesus lizard,mule, lou reed, good bourbon, and not so good bourbon.

Then came our band Begin By Gathering Supplies. We played a great set and everyone was into our music. Here is the link.....

After our set that's when the Elbo room booking dept. lived up to it's non hip status.

The next band, Orion Pax, were a total bunch of Douchebags.
Not only were they were terrible, but they had attitude.
The Bass player was playing barefoot on a stage that moments earlier my shoes were sticking to in a strange gummy sort of way. The singer is under the assumtion that he is talented because he got a, "Bachelors degree in Vocal Performance."

Now here is why I'm mentioning this story. In between songs the singer said, with a straight face and no one in the band laughed including himself,.........

"I want to thank the bands that opened for us.......for making us look so good." WTF!!!! Marsup and I looked at each other like, did that asshole really just say that?? It was unbelievable statement because they were so bad!!

Then the kicker.... They start playing, the only cover of the night, a straight ahead version of Karma Police by Radiohead! LOL! The whole situation was fucking laughable. The other opening band, The king hen, also could not believe what had just happened. It was so bad we all went to the upstairs bar got a drink and easily laughed it off.

and there was another cover, that last band played a Pulp cover and you went nuts, you were blitzed but it definitely riled you up.

Elbo Room sucks. Never play there again, there's no point.

I know what you mean but it was fun and better than the usuall practice at our space. Trust me if we could get bookings at better places we be there in a heartbeat. I'm looking at you Empty Bottle and Hideout.

Wow. That's awesome, in a really horrible, crappy way. They sound like the douchiest band ever. I saw my friends playing in New York once, and the got stuck after a Meatloaf cover band. The crowd loved the cover band, and pretty much all left after them. Which was cool with me, more room, less idiots. My other friends' band kept getting stuck with shitty jam bands all the time by promoters. People who organize shows often don't seem to know shit about putting together a good lineup.

For some reason, it makes me think back to 1991. I was in my first band while living in Florida. This was of course around the time that "Grunge" broke big. Florida was shitpacked with hair metal bands back then, and most all of them obviously took a meeting and decided to tweak the product for the new tastes. So there were all these bands of burnouts with their Charvel guitars and hair, but now trying to play a darker, more serious tune. And my little band often ended up playing shows with these crossover chameleons. It actually was pretty entertaining at times. Especially to talk with the bands, listening to how serious they were about their musical careers, trying to find "management, all that. There was a sadness in their desperation that formed quite an impression on my young mind.
Dear Begin By Gathering Supplies, it is my opinion that you were schooled in the ways of Showmanship last night, and if you are serious about making some real money in music, you will fix your aim on hooking up with Onion Pax and forming a brotherhood. Their coattails are ready to be leaped upon.
