R.E.M. record: Chronic Town EP

I will say this EP and their first album are the zenith of their career for me. If you were in Georgia at the time, and followed them from the beginning, the mood and atmosphere of these recordings, and the events surrounding the band's rise, was intoxicating. The transition from Chronic Town to Murmur was a really big deal for many of us. "Wolves Lower" still sound otherworldly in spots. Not crap

I absolutely loved this record when I first heard it back in the day, and all these years later it still holds up and still makes me smile. Jangle fuled guitar pop at its very best. I'll take these five songs over 90% of what R.E.M. have cut since 1990 (and why oh why doesn't this band break up while they can still pretend they have some dignity left?). Not crap!

Another guilty pleasure of mine. I say guilty pleasure because this album is actually pretty bad. Gae and bad. But I still have an emotional attachment to it, because I got it the week it came out, and because I didn't know better I ended up memorizing it because I played it at least once a day for way too long.

Crap.

I've recently had a change of mind on this topic.

The only good thing about R.E.M. is a stinking drunk Peter Buck jumping into a pile of empty beer bottles fro the seat of a wooden barstool. Fucking stupid drunk asshole.
