Is a practice space out of the question? That's money much better spent.

Mesh heads suck, but maybe that instead?

I started going down this road and just stopped. Seriously, there wasn't any point in me practicing on those things, there was no translation to a real drumkit. I would end up using one just to work on my inner-rhythm-holding abilities, which a mousepad on top of a notebook and a metronome accomplishes just fine.

really no translation? so let's say i'm not that good a drummer and i'm going to practice on an electronic kit to learn better. it's actually going to make me worse?

No, but they feel so completely different from a normal kit that they're almost a different instrument. If you already have a kit, try fitting the mesh heads. You can buy triggers that can be attached to a drum module.

This method is quieter than an electronic drum kit and takes up less space as a bonus.

there's one guy here who started with electronic drums.
i personally like the concept. i also like the idea of playing thru a bunch of effects and shooting some interesting samples with each hit. i even think that you can get something very fresh of interesting with it.
but yeah, perhaps a drum kit with mesh heads and triggers would be simpler and more useful in the long-run.

It could make you better, it could make you worse, it could do nothing. Why waste time and money practicing on something that might help? It'd be like if I clipped the two top strings off my guitar to practice "bass" at home, then play an actual bass for gigs. Sure there would be similarities, but it's just not the same.

That's just me, though.

If you want to actually play and explore the world of an electronic kit, have fun, they're a blast, but I wouldn't recommend for real drumkit practice.

i have heard recently that korg (?) have now got some kind of patent on the trigger in the mesh heads so pretty much all other manufacturers were going to have to cease making them.

just a word of warning as the after sales support may be shit if you do end up buying another brand.

i know for sure yamaha have stopped... a web search should let you know more.

A friend who has been playing since before I was born has offered to sell me a set of Yamaha DTXpress digital drums to start with.

I definitely do not have room to setup a full size kit, nor do I have the ability to make that much racket.

$400 seems to be a decent deal, but I will have to buy a bass pedal.

Any thoughts from users of this or similar digital kits?
