howdy kids.
i blew the 18" on my acoustic 371. it's the famed cerwin vega. right now i'm trying to figure out if i should just go for a 2x15 (mesa) or replace the 18.
were i to replace the 18 - what would i use...? is it worth it even? i may just sell it and get the mesa 2x15.
i'm currently using an svt w/ an 8x10 - this is to provide some nice, earthshaking low end. think burning witch, godflesh and especially his hero is gone. speaking of which, anyone know what the heck carl auge used...? his bass tone on monument to thieves is pretty stunning...
best,

I don't agree with you Fly.
At least not regarding the 18" acoustic cabs.
There's one at some practice place I use to play alot, this speaker is an ace. It's punchy at least as my 2X15 cabinet and I never had volume problems with it.

The 18" Ampeg classic that that the other guy uses at our space blew some time ago, the classic 15's that we share have had no problems.
I'm using one of the classic 15's and the EV 15 that I built and have been very pleased with this set up.
Are you going to build yourself a "Dietz" Eliya?

Enclosures with 18s in them tend to be rather unwieldy. Other than that, I havent encountered any problems with 18" speakers that I havent also encountered with 15" or 12" (or 10" or whatever) speakers taken as a group. There are good and bad versions of all standard speaker types. I had a pair of cheap ass Peavey subs with 18" black widows in them that were fantastic, had a very defined low-midrange (punchy?), and were nigh-unblowable.

What the fuck? The guy didn't say one word about wanting it to be "punchy." He said he wants "earthshaking low end."
The 371 is a great cab. Keep it. Replace the 18.
EV made a really nice ProLine 18 which is fairly robust. I think it's 8 Ohms / 400 Watts (not 100% sure if that's correct, but that's what I remember)...which should be OK for your application. Trying to find those old CV's is a pain in the ass. Trust me on that.
EDIT: Oh, and you can ask Carl yourself...

yeah, i'm not too concerned with punchy - but definition is nice. my bandmates loved the cerwin vega - i thought it was too farty. but the 8x10 kind of balances it out. but how the heck would we record that...? the sound waves don't manifest until 15-20 ft away. could a 2x15 give me that same low end...?
if i do replace the speaker, i definitely don't want another vintage cerwin vega - i'll blow it in a second. in fact, i don't want another vintage speaker - something new would be great. i'm not a fan of vintage speakers - my 2002 ampeg 8x10 sounds amazing w/ my vintage head and i have the safety of knowing that those things won't be giving out anytime soon.
stewart of burning witch/asva recommended a specific brand to me a while back. let me look it up and get back to you guys. see if you can offer any advice.
the ev could be cool - but is it still manufactured...?
yeah, i saw carl auge's page, i was checking out his new band last night. i don't know if i wanna bug him - but goddamn, his bass tones on that record are brilliant. listen to "cavities" - right after the bass introduction, when everyone kicks in...holy hell. but yeah, sounds very close to burning witch, and i know stewart was all over the 360 w/ folded 18.
but yeah - you think he'd mind...?

I've had varying success with trying to record folded cabs, but to be honest, it's not very easy. If you have a decent resonant room, try turning the cab toward the wall. Turning it toward the wall kills a lot of the high-frequencies...there's a thread somewhere on here about this, just too lazy to find it right now. I usually use multiple mics when recording. In this case I'd go with a good dynamic mic (M380 or something similar) mic it up close, and then using some kind of condenser mic(s)...I like using small-diaphragm ones for this...mic the room...maybe on the floor, and as far away as possible (ten or more feet).

Maybe. But I doubt it. That folded design is awesome if you want those massive lows.

I don't think so, but I know for a fact that the re-cone kit is still being made.

Don't think so. He seems like a pretty laid back guy. But I've only talked to him like once or twice.

Put the folded horn in a corner.
Mic the room. Floor mics are esp useful here.
Try it pointed out of as well as into the corner.

thanks for the recording advice guys, greatly appreciated.
curious - how would you use it in a live setting w the 8x10 bear in mind, there's a drum question that's active on this forum, and that's the drummer i play with. obviously, me and the guitarist are pretty loud and we've preferred to play a lot of squatter venues sans pa system. i'm thinking for those kinds of places, use only the 8x10. proper venues, i can bust out the 18" (or 2x15).
but i was thinking that i'd mic the 8x10, but mostly use stage volume, and then not mic the 1x18?
that's why i was thinking about picking up a 2x15 - thought that in a pinch, if i couldn't use the 8x10 w/ 18, the 2x15 would be a compromise between the two.
but still - any other suggestions for speakers? bootsykronos recommends mccauley - but didn't give me a model number.
