In Perth, they've just introduced random drug testers where the monarch take a swob of saliva to test if you've used pot, ecstasy or speed. At the same time you blow for drink driving.

Anyone got any interesting anecdotes/stories about encounters with the cops over this? Any grey areas? How does it work where you come from and what are the punishments?

All I know is that it's a great idea.

They've had them in Adelaide for a while, and I don't really wanted to get wiped out in a car because some other driver is high on ice.

It depends how the test registers. If someone who used drugs say the day before, but has slept it off and is driving sober it is utter bullshit. Even worse are testing for weed with it showing up on tests a month after use. If on the other hand the test shows someone is driving intoxicated on drugs at the time of the test that seems reasonable.

are they testing people who are operating cars or are they testing everybody?

drunk drivers are easily the world's most harmful and dangerous population of drug users. but the laws around them are too tight right now.

i don't doubt that the saliva tests can detect marijuana. funny, the most detectable drug in drug tests is also the most trivial and harmless. stoned drivers don't get in accidents, check the stats. i, as a smoker, was skeptical about this, because i know i've felt uneasy driving stoned at times, but the theory is that this uneasiness just motivates any nervous stoners to pay better attention; motor skills stay in line.

other drugs, good luck on finding those. i'm not sure how saliva tests work, but when i used to do blow, i was given a piss test at 9 pm, after having done blow at 6 pm on the same day plus a bunch in the preceding days; turned up negative. but the smoking i'd done up to 3 days earlier also didn't show up, might have been a weak test.

The drunk driving laws are too strict as it is right now, the problem 3 in the afternoon drunks are gonna be problem drunks no matter what laws they pass....right now the laws are so tight that normal people are getting their lives ruined because they had a few drinks and drove home at 3 in the morning. It's all a bunch of bullshit.

Yeah amen to that. The penalty being based strictly on the number of offenses is bullshit. There should be lighter punishments for those who are just a little above the allowable blood alcohol level than those who are stinking wasted on booze. Also I agree the time of drunk driving could be considered. At 2 AM the only people on the road are drunks, people who work third shift and people traveling long distance through the night. You would hard pressed to find any innocent children to mow down in the dead of night.

From my experience driving a straight shot from Austin to Madison last spring I think adderall use should be mandatory for late night driving. It also makes music sound great if you combine it with weed. Got me all the way thru Oklahoma, Missouri and most of Illinois and I drove like a fucking champ.
