This is a very nice read, thanks for posting
Bob Weston wrote:We want to educate our clients and try to get CDs sounding good again. [...] We want to give the volume control back to the listener. We’ll make it sound good. You guys decide how loud you want it by adjusting the volume knob.
Here's hoping that both business and this 'ideological' side of CMS will be successful!

Sounds like a pretty bitchin' place.
Kudos to Bob and Jason!
Some interesting points regarding mastering to vinyl from digital sources:
Bob Weston wrote: The word length is 24-bit. The resolution depends on what we are supplied with for source material and what we decide on with the client. Most of the time it will be 44.1kHz.
So can the Chicago Mastering Service computers handle 192kHz files?
I can't imagine that it's all that common.

"I’m still going to do the jazz recording I’ve been doing for the past few years. It’s really fun and rewarding. Live to multi-track, everybody in the same room, no headphones, no overdubs. Lots of problem solving in the set-up. Then the recording and mixing are very straightforward and fast. It feels more like how we’d make indie-rock records 15 years ago before the protools invasion."
I'd love to read a whole interview on this topic. (What jazz recording?)
This makes me think of the photo of Bob fiddling with a tape machine in a Polvo album, with a cat on his shoulder... Or am I making that up?

Not making it up, regarding the cat.
Over the past few years I've recorded a bunch of jazz records for bands on Okkadisk, Atavistic, and others. Some bands: Vandermark 5, Tripleplay, FME, Territory Band, Peter Brotzman Chicago Tentet, Powerhouse Sound, Spaceways, Inc, Zu, Atomic School Days, Bridge 61, and some others I can't think of.
