Look, I know there's another thread where people tell about their jobs, but it's a few years old and I think that most of those people are gone now.

So I thought it would be a good idea if we all described what we do for a living. I'm curious.

I am a 3rd generation machinist. My grandfather founded our shop in 1946. My father bought it from him in 1975 and I will probably inherit the business.

We still have most of the same machinery. We have a Bridgeport, a Brown & Sharpe end mill, a Monarch standard lathe, a Bullard vertical lathe among several other drillpresses, saws and other potential horror movie props. Our newest machine was made in the the 60's. All manual. No C&C pussy shit around here.

Right now I'm using the Monarch to drill holes in sewer lids to be retro-fitted with electronic meter reading devices.

I am a Divisional Secretary at Nottingham Trent University.

It's ok usually. It's not too stressful, the holiday's pretty good, the pay's ok, there's some dicks here but no more than in any office.

However, at the moment it's a nightmare because I'm working odd days in between touring to save on annual leave. I come in exhausted and have heaps of work to do. I should have finished 40 minutes ago, but I think I'll probably be here another 30 mins - 1 hour finishing some report.

I harbour ambitions to make a living from music. They have no foundation in reality.

Better get on with it so I can go home...

Cartographer. I wear big funny glasses that allow me depth perception while looking at aerial photography on computer screens. Then I trace shit to create spatial data (high tech digital maps) to client specifications. It was a cool job for the first year or two, but then the tedium really sets in. The only saving graces is no one fucks with me, I get to listen to music and talk radio all day on headphones and flexibility of my hours. It is still time to quit and go back to geography school in 2008.

I am currently doing update mapping of a Chicago ‘burb called Winnetka. We never get to map the most “colorful” areas of Chicago as they do not have the tax base to pay us.
