food:

pinks, apple pan, any fast food place on sunset in hollywood, in and out burger.

of course there's higher end places too. sushi in LA is pricey, but good quality.

fun:

check out the freak show in venice. rent a bike, ride up to santa monica on the board walk and back. this is actually a pleasant thing to do.

take a drive on mulholland.

see the sun set.

museum of jurassic technology

peterson auto museum

art in LA is big now. check out the space at ace gallery.

of course as a musician you have to go to guitar center and check out the vintage room. ask to play whatever you want. want to play a $40k mint fender guitar? they'll let you.

Fill yourself to the brim with hatred.

Okay, okay. I used to hate the general LA area and sprawl. Then one time my band had a day off down there and we just stayed with a friend in Long Beach. We just treated Long Beach like its own little town and I tried to forget that in three directions was 50+ miles of non-stop city. I had an okay time.

That's the trick to LA... don't think of it as 50 cities smooshed together and try to navigate it as a massive whole, spend time in small areas and pretend that's all there is to it.

In what neighborhood are you staying? I'm partial to East L.A. (Silverlake, Echo Park, Loz Feliz, Griffith Park, Downtown, Hollywood, Koreatown). The area around Vermont has a lot of hip stuff like:
http://www.steveallentheater.com/ great theater, awesome shows -with free parking!
http://www.thedresden.com/ Go see Marty and Elaine
Good pizza here up the street.
I've yet to visit the newly re-opened Griffith Observatory but Griffith Park is a great place to hike, as is Runyon Canyon
http://www.ucbtheatre.com/la/ See a show at UCB, eat at Prizzi's next door and browse at Counterpoint Books and Records. (valet recommended)
http://www.iowest.com/ You'll miss the show I do here every Sunday at 10pm, but there are great shows here every night. Across the street (Hollywood Blvd.) is a new bar I'm digging called Tiny's KO, and around the corner on Cahuenga is my favorite bar in L.A, The Burgundy Room. This is all a few blocks away from Ameoba Records. Pay to park in a lot in Hollywood.
http://www.attheecho.com/ Sky Saxon is playing the 16th

The New Beverly Cinema is the last of the great film repertory theaters -the week you're in town you can catch
LABYRINTH (new 35mm print!)(1986) & LEGEND (1985) @ 7:30 & 9:30, respectively
The Vista is a beautiful movie theater. I'd see whatever is playing there. It's right next door to Tiki Ti and a really good Mexican place that I forget the name of. ALso down the street from El Cid, where every Monday they hold:
http://www.garagecomedy.com/ Monday night - funny stuff.
http://www.farmersmarketla.com/ Hit the Farmers Market for breakfast (I recommend the Crepe place)
Check out the Getty or MOCA
http://www.getty.edu/
http://www.moca.org/
http://www.lacma.org/
Try our new subway and under appreciated public transit system: Just type in where you are, where you're going and what time you need to be there.

Lots of good, cheap tacos everywhere

Avoid:
Sunset Strip, Beverly hills, West L.A in general
spaghetti
