I just read this on Alternet. Its' pretty interesting, and makes a lot of sense. This was a particularly depressing bit though:

William Astore wrote:Fear of being labeled "the enemy within" is already silently reshaping our politics as even decorated combat veterans like Congressman (and retired Marine Corps colonel) John Murtha are not immune from being smeared for criticizing the President's war. Politicians recognize that, in a campaign, it's well-nigh impossible to overcome charges of weakness and pusillanimity. Senator Hillary Clinton senses that she may be unelectable unless she argues for us to continue to fight the good fight in Iraq, albeit more intelligently. In fact, if you're looking for significant changes in troop levels or strategy there, better hunker in for Inauguration Day 2009 -- and then prepare to wait some more.

Honestly though, I wish I could be more supportive of the war. That way we'd win, and quickly too.

If we lose Iraq, you re to blame.

We are just helping them along in democracy right now, the war is long over
You do realize that cynical attitudes like yours is why we're at fault for how Iraq has turned out?
If you were more supportive of our government, we would've had this shit in the bag a long time ago.

There's an interesting article in the newest issue of Foreign Policy Magazine (sadly you need to buy it or pay to see the article) that blames the American public of not supporting the war because we kept on spending like we would anyway after 9/11 as opposed to buckling down and rationing for the war.
It also mentioned how military personnel is at it's lowest since before Pearl Harbor.
It seemed like kind of a right wing view of things, it talked about neoliberalism, but it also said how Bush told the American people to keep on flying and taking vacations after 9/11.
I read it as being contrived as a whole, but it did make out a couple good points in regards to how fucked our economy is as far as our lack of war effort is concerned.
By that, I mean how we didn't care about Bush's bullshit war.
