I chose director because the only acting of his I recall seeing was from Rosemary's Baby and The Killers. I thought he was great in R's B but just okay in The Killers (alongside Ronald Reagan in a truly weird final acting role).

Of films he directed (and wrote) I also recall only two of them, Faces and The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (with the great Timothy Carey). Both quite different films and both totally absorbing mind fucks. Both highly recommended by this chump.

He was great in The Fury. Talk about chewing the scenery, he became the scenery!

I think Cassavetes was more exceptional as a filmmaker than as an actor.
