I was very, very disappointed.

Wtf, stupid goddamn movie reviewer people? I had no idea I was walking into a squelching shit factory. Give a girl a head's up next time. Jerks.

the preview for this was painful enough.

When the TV spots advertise it as, "...the most achingly romantic film since 'Titanic'", I am very glad I have chosen to avoid it.

Now here's the thing: the book this movie was based on was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and McEwan's previous book, Amsterdam won the Booker. Now I know films aren't books, but many of the best things I've read have been bestowed with this prize (Coetzee's Disgrace, Doyle's Paddy Clarke, Ha ha ha, Roy's the God of Small Things, Hulme's the bone People and the motherfucker of all motherfuckers, Rushdie's Midnight's Children) have been great stories. I thought this one would at least be somewhat 'okay'. It was HORRIBLE.

at least 300 made me angry. This one was the most boring film I've seen in years. I felt nothing.

I'm sad to hear the bad reaction to this movie. I've heard good things by and large, and Ian McEwan is easily one of the best authors around these days, so I was hoping it'd turn out well. May still check it out anyhow though.

seriously, this movie was so unbelieveably boring and rotten and heavy handed and overwrought and underexplained. Even the nice cinematography, competent acting, the incredible set of the beach (totally underused) and the fairly okay 1st 1/3rd of the film can't prepare you for how bad the last 2/3rds are.

Okay, here's the story:

My dear friend Tawney had two free tickets to a movie, and we were due to hang out. What movie were we going to see? "Atonement," she said, "my roommate loved it." Now, keeping in mind that Tawney, much as I love the girl, is the one that made me see both Patch Adams and Black Sheep, I was prepared for the worst.

We watched it, walked out, looked at each other and said "Meh." It wasn't terrible. It wasn't particularly good. It looked really pretty and the acting was good. The script was shitty. It'll win best picture, because it's the kind of movie designed to do just that. I'll never see it again.
