my old kenwood has decided (today) to start varying the play speed by itsself, irregularly, with some humorous results. i imagine that this is merely a belt issue, but my wife has suggested that we try to get a new turntable, so i turn to you, my more technically-oriented online comrades, to guide me.
1) most 'decent' turntables will be better than the 15 year old plastic kenwood i have.
2) i'd like to spend at the very most a couple hundred bucks - times are a bit tight right now.
3) i'd like some cool slab-looking thing which is way out of my price range.
who's got an extra sitting in their closet they want to sell?

I'm no electronics expert, but one thing I do know is that belt-drives are CRAP. I have a
Technics SL-DD22 direct-drive that is about 20 years old and still works just fine. Obviously they cost a bit more, but it's worth it.

+1 on the Project stuff.
Belt drives are NOT crap.
If you like to tinker you may have fun with an old AR-AX which can be found for cheap on Ebay.

It's a little over what you want to spend, but Music Direct (in the west loop) has this champagne-colored Project table (with cartridge) on a closeout special for $329:
