URGENT! Analog tape advice

I need to buy some tape for a session on Thursday. The place I've been has 3M 996 1 inch analog tape on a 10 1/2 inch reel at £30 per reel. This sounds stupidly cheap. Am I about to ripped off? The guy I'm recording with says it is too good to be true. I've googled it and found a site that said it was made in 1990 and may have degraded.
Help.

Sounds like the guy you're recording with is probably right.
Have you tried
pro-tape?
I'm not sure if they'll have 1" in stock but they're more likely than anyone else to, and they're the cheapest I've seen for RMGI.

Just checked,
studiospares claim to have 1" SM900 in stock on their website for £70/reel. I'd call them up to order though because they are run and staffed by total fuckwits so I wouldn't be surprised if it was actually out of stock.

Cheers, yeah I'm getting some RMG900 from Protape tomorrow.
Thanks for the help.
This cheap tape looks fine though...

hip priest,
do you sometimes, or previously, gone by the name 'GBL'? Or maybe you're just into the fall or something. What gives?

I love 996 and have used it almost 100%
Its old tape but hold up well.great formula and i think gp9 and basf 900 were all made after this formula.
the new breeders record has a song called Spark which was 996 master.
but like anything you need to make sure there has been no water damage or edits everywhere which then would make it regardless what tape a problem,
thanks
